The balancing of several different ecosystems involves insects which play a crucial role. Insects benefit man in many ways and to some extent they make their work easier. The good sides also come with the bad sides as they can be both destructive and a danger to humans and their surroundings. When they become a threat through lethal bites and devastating pets, humans must repulse them from their surroundings.

Insect repellent refer to substance that is applied to various surfaces and places including skins, clothing, interior and exterior spaces. This is done to discourage the insects and arthropods in general from climbing or landing on the sprayed surfaces. The application of repellents usually control and reduce the outbreak of insect-borne diseases such as dengue fever, Lyme disease, malaria, river blindness, bubonic plague, and west Nile fever among many others.

Not everybody is at risk of contracting insect-borne diseases. Generally, there are locations that are more prone to these diseases than others. In most cases, people living in rural areas tend to be more prone to attacks by insects than those who live in urban areas. Mosquitoes, tsetse flies and many bugs also favor places with rivers or pools of water because they need water to lay their eggs. Thus, people living in such places should be more careful.

It is very important for an individual to pay attention to the ingredients in a repellant before buying one. The efficiency and safety of a repellant is dependent on the ingredients. It is recommended to select a product that is safe and cannot cause any health complications when used. There are also specific ingredients that may prevent people with some medical conditions from using the repellent.

As a result, one should know what is contained in a product, especially people who experience severe allergic reactions upon coming into contact with certain substances. Some ingredients are also more efficient than others. In some research, it was determined that products that contained eucalyptus, picaridin, oil of lemon, and deet were more efficient. Besides these specific ingredients, the product may also contain ingredients in the same category as these ones.

Check the ingredients of the repellant as well as their concentration. Some repellants may contain the same ingredients yet they may be rated differently. The reason for this could be due to difference in concentration of the same ingredient. Also playing a huge role in this is the form in which product is availed in the market. Compared to other forms a product appears in lotion form is usually less effective.

Always read the accompanying application manual carefully before use. A number of them are applied on either clothing or skin. Application of the products on skin beneath clothing is highly discouraged. Avoid excessive application and instead apply enough.

Repellents should not be applied over irritated skin, wounds, or cuts. In other words, the product is meant for external use only, and should not find its way into the body or blood stream. Eyes and mouth should be avoided during application, and one should wash their hands thoroughly after use.
