A Look Into The Professional Growth Plan For Principals

By Helen Murray

There are many important roles to be played by different stakeholders in learning institutions, but none is more important than ensuring that things are running as they should. The principal is the chief administrator in the school and is also the educational leader. He or she is charged with a multitude of responsibilities all geared to ensuring that normal operations run in the school without any hindrances. To be able to do this, they need the help of a system usually referred to as a professional growth plan for principals that helps them stay in focus.

In order to ensure smooth running of operations in a learning institution, then a principal has to put their focus on several things. First on the list involves supervising instructions. They can do this by paying regular impromptu visits in classrooms and check on how teachers relate to their students. Apart from this, it is their duty to ensure that they work together with the teachers in matters involving planning and the actualization of such plans so as to create a conducive learning environment.

Keeping all the staff in check is also part of their responsibility. School staff may include librarians, games teachers, counsellors as well as assistants. It is of utmost importance that these staff be closely monitored and their activities and performance in the school is kept under check. In addition, they should also be motivated to yield better performance.

Every child or student for that matter needs an environment that is conducive enough for them to get to learn. For instance, all the essential resources should be predisposed to the student. Another vital thing is the curriculum. Improvements need to be done every once in a while so that it best caters to the learning needs for each and every student.

In the education system, there are two activities that play an equal role in ensuring that the student grows into a holistic individual. They include curricular and extra-curricular activities. Curricular activities include things like examinations, evaluations, and guidance programs among others whereas extra-curricular activities include debating, excursions, games, and sports just to mention a few. All these activities need supervision and it is the work of principal to ensure that they are both given equal importance.

They have the responsibility of instilling a culture of discipline in the school. This can be done through providing guidance on how the students are supposed to conduct themselves while in school and also on the outside world. They are also responsible for setting up rules and regulations as well as consequences if ever such rules are broken. Common punishments that come with going against the rules include detention, suspension, and in worst case scenarios expulsions.

Lastly, but most important of all is motivating the students to perform well in their academics. They should instill a belief in each and every student that they are capable of achieving anything so long as they set their mind to it. They should always encourage the students and get to know where they are in terms of their learning.

It is important that the head gets to focus his or her leadership on the above mentioned points and work closely with the teachers towards creating the perfect learning environment.
