Darlington County And The Tony Chavis Campaign

By Arthur Moore

There are often a number of candidates running in any election, whether local, national or regional. When it comes to Darlington, South Carolina, there are multiple candidates. One of which is that of Tony Chavis, a retired South Carolina State Highway Patrol officer. Mr. Chavis is running for Sheriff because of a desire to strengthen community safety while building stronger ties with police organizations.

As a retired trooper, having worked tirelessly for the SCHP from 1989 to 2016, Mr. Chavis continues to have a desire to enforce local law. As such, this former highway patrolman is now looking toward becoming Sheriff in the local county. However, to do so, the former patrolman is counting on local voters.

Mr. Chavis is a man with four daughters, one son and a loving wife. Having lived in Hartsville basically since birth, the former trooper is quite well known to community, family and friends. While spending a great deal of time with family and friends outside work, Tony has also worked a great number of overtime during the time spent as a highway patrolman.

In early life, Tony graduated from Wallace High School, then played football for South Carolina State University. After which, Mr. Chavis graduated from the S. C. Academy of Justice. While this is the case, Tony has continued with educational goals, thus resulting in several certifications in the area of law enforcement.

Tony served in the U. S. Marines for a year in the early 1990s. It remains unclear as to why the service ended after only one year's time. Still, Mr. Chavis is considered a veteran of Operation Desert Storm regardless of discharge status. If voters want to know more about this service, a public records search on the candidate will most likely return these results.

Other activities and interests include a strong presence in community and supporting a number of non-profit organizations. With a strong sense of civil duty, the candidate has often donated large amounts of money to various charities over the years. In fact, often being the first to donate to various charities on many occasions.

One thing that sets this candidate apart from others is the belief that positive changes can be made if elected. School children are of specific interest. For, the candidate believes that crime is often based in communities in which children and police have no connection. If elected, Tony will continue with presentations currently being made at local schools and universities on a regular and on-going basis.

Now as a candidate and previously as friend, neighbor and community member, the retired patrol officer sees citizens as the primary source when it comes to preventing crime. For, if residents can install web cameras, security systems and create strong neighborhood watch groups, crime can often be reduced. Whereas, if a crime is committed, then these aspects often make it easier to identify those committing the offense. After which, Mr. Chavis and others believe these individuals need be brought to justice in a swift and appropriate manner.

Ultimately, the candidate wants to build stronger community ties between residents and police. If elected, the former patrolman plans to do so through education, community organizing and school presentations. Knowing one of the only ways to do so is to be elected Sheriff, the candidate's hope is that many locals will vote in upcoming elections.
