Why Professional Development For Teachers Is Vital In Learning

By Margaret Adams

The best learning institutions all over have one obligation which is to ensure that their student can learn. There are many areas of learning that have been ensured to be perfect so that the student can achieve this. The significance of professional development for teachers has however been shelved out in most cases though it is the most important since a good teacher makes a great learner.

Though most people including those running this sector are not aware, a student will only be able to learn if they are self-motivated to do. To make them get this motivation is the job of the teacher who is in the center of entire learning. Not every teacher can do this, however. It is only those who have taken the initiative to sharpen their skills and experience further.

This form of development is something that can be achieved even as one is in their daily activities. Research has shown most teachers resign even before working for five years. This is because they lack a proper induction into the industry. They normally lack experience hence it is important that when they are into the profession, they have a person of greater experience to act as their mentors.

The induction which is ignored by many is important at boosting the confidence of the new staff who are in class for the first time. Also, if the mentor and the new staff happen to be in the same institution is more relieving since the mentor can be able to give them the necessary tips for dealing with the students they are going to be dealing with. The teacher is thus able to prepare adequately.

There is the theory that the performance of a student in academics is heavily influenced by their social and economic life back at the students home. Though it has been accepted that teachers cannot change this fact, the truth is that with partaking in these programs, a teacher can be able to make the student go over it and become better in their class work.

The curriculum will always detect what is being taught in class. However, of late there have been numerous changes in this curriculum making it a bit challenging to the teachers to keep up with it because of the frequency of the changes. However, some development programs have the potential of ensuring that the teacher is equipped with all the changes and how they can be instilled to the learners.

To make sure that learning is fun to the learners, educators have to take up these roles. However, most of them are never equipped with these techniques from their initial training. However, there are stipulated programs that have been designed to equip the teacher with the best skills of integrated latest learning technology tools and other means that make learning interesting.

It is evident that learning will always be defined by the teachers available. The management of institutions should refrain from focusing on aspects of education that are not important and switch to focusing on bettering the skills and experience of their staff.
